Mary Holmes

Professor Mary Holmes is Professor of Emotions and Society at the School of Social and Political Science. She joined the sociology subject area at Edinburgh in 2013.  As well as the sociology of emotions, Mary’s research interests include:
  • Intimate relationships
  • Gender
  • Feminism
  • Sexuality. 
She is currently researching how climate change is impacting on women’s reproductive choices. Mary also has a new project called ‘How we feel now’, which uses the Mass Observation archive to research changes in British understandings and expressions of emotions since the 1930s. Mary’s recent books include:
