Emily Mann

Emily (she/her) is an ESRC funded PhD student in Criminology and Sociology at the University of Edinburgh researching policing and gender in Scotland. Emily is an Associate Fellow of the HE Academy and teaches criminology, criminal justice, politics and gender studies and co-hosts the Gender & Sexuality Studies Deep Dive into Judith Butler and Luce Irigaray. Emily features as a guest sociologist on BBC Radio Scotland and her award winning public engagement fringe debut with the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas asked ‘Can the Police be Feminist?”. Emily is also a member of the First Minister’s National Advisory Council on Women and Girls that aims to tackle gender inequality in Scotland.

Current and notable research projects/ publications:

  • Traditionally ‘cop culture’ has been understood as permeated with ‘machismo’ and patriarchal structures. More recently policing in Scotland is criticised as “racist, sexist, misogynistic, and discriminatory”. My PhD research re-evaluates outdated and binary definitions of gender in policing by exploring the experiences of those working in Police Scotland today.   • I recently conducted a literature review on intersectionality and policing with Julie Berg at the University of Glasgow as part of the Seldom Heard Communities Grants funded by Police Scotland, the Scottish Police Authority and the Scottish Institute for Policing Research Project Name - Seldom Heard Communities Grant - Accounting For Complexities: An Intersectional Approach to Enhancing Police Practitioner Accountability, Legitimacy & Sustainable Reform
